Ękwehę:we: The Real People

- Game - Writer, Designer, Programmer, Artist

An in-development demonstration of a video game that is part of a larger project in developing a Tuscarora/Haudenosaunee Universe. This game is placed within contemporary Tuscarora territory and the gameplay is designed to encourage youth and members of the Tuscarora Nation and Community to engage with their land and cultural knowledge.

I look to our traditional stories to influence the thinking behind the creation of Haudenosaunee superheroes and what I have gathered is that many of the themes in these narratives focus on the abilities of humans. These stories contain underlying motifs that emphasize the superb ability of the mind as powerful and capable of affecting great change within our real world.

Many cultural expressions of the Haudenosaunee such as stories and beadwork utilize elements of metaphor to convey significant themes and messages. I adapt these concepts into the development of a Haudenosaunee Universe by creating superheroes that are both original and based on real life people, stories, and events; both of which depicting "superpowers" that highlight and reflect the great change we are capable of making as Ękwehę:we: The Real People.
